The core building block of deep learning. Loosely brain-inspired: layers of simple math units (“nodes”) joined by weighted links. Data flows in, gets transformed layer by layer, a prediction comes out. “Learning” is just tuning those weights.

Show one images of cats and dogs thousands of times and the weights settle until it reliably tells them apart.
